The Gift That I Keep On Taking

My birthday was last week and I realized something. Something wonderful. And I feel it is my duty as a parent to share it.
When my kids asked me what I wanted for my birthday I told them I wanted no fighting, no arguing, no whining and no tattling. Being terrible negotiators, and not having anything else to give me, they agreed right away. Throughout the day, whenever they began to fight, argue, whine or tattle I reminded them of their gift and they stopped.
I was amazed.
But, that’s not what I learned.
The following day, my daughter came to tattle about something. I stopped her and told her, “No tattling. Remember, for my birthday you agreed not tattle.”
Her argument was predictable and she said that it’s not my birthday anymore.
That’s when I realized something. Gifts, unless explicitly stated, are not given only for that day. “You can’t just take back your gift because it’s not my birthday.”
Naturally she argued. “Yes we can.”
My response was, “Okay. It’s not Christmas anymore so I can take back all of your presents.”
Her response? No fighting, no arguing, no whining and no tattling.
It’s been seven days. I can’t believe it’s working either.
You’ve got to get this gift.

Wow. You are a super mad genius! I really must try this. My mind is completely blown here. The problem is I don’t have a birthday until December. So it will be a while before I can tell you whether it works with teenagers. But I do believe you are onto something!

Thanks, Danielle. The best part is that, even if this doesn’t work out, they also got me Call of Duty Ghosts.
