RPGame Night Etiquette

This is a guest post from Jason Anarchy, creator of the Drinking Quest series of comedy games.

So you want to play some Dungeons and Dragons or a D&D style game and you don’t know where to start? I play a lot of RPGs and it’s important to have a code of etiquette to keep these games running smoothly.  As a creator of a successful RPG series, these are the rules I follow that will lead to some wonderful game nights for you and your friends:

1.    Bring Beer. Even if there’s beer there already it’s just a nice gesture.

2.    When you go to grab a beer, ask if the other guys want a beer.

3.    If you’re gaming at a friend’s mom’s house, tone down the swears.

4.    When one of the guys awkwardly starts breaking down about how he’s 30 and he hasn’t done anything with this life, just grab a beer, smile & nod until he stops.

5.    When another friend gets way to drunk and tells you he values your friendship, that’s OK.  We’re all bros here.

6.    If a player rolls crappy character stats, there are no rerolls! Tell him to man up and grab a beer.

7.    The host should get the second best chair.  They’re hosting so they deserve a pretty good one.
But as a symbolic gesture give someone else that one really good chair.  Players have a lot of reasons to drink but it shouldn’t be because of their crappy chair is causing them pain.

8.    Table Space: You need room to have all your game components, plates full of greasy pizza, room to put a laptop when a friend inevitably puts his laptop up there because somebody talked about a YouTube video. Also you’ll need room for the beer.  It’s really worth it to invest in a larger fold up table just for game nights.

9.    Don’t flick bottle caps across the room after you open a beer! It’s obnoxious.  They’re a pain to step on and they drive my wife crazy when she’s vacuuming.  It makes my skin crawl every time I see it happen.  DO YOU HEAR THAT LONNY?

10.  Have bottles of water ready for the end of the night.  After all that drinking it’s a good idea to start hydrating to minimize the inevitable gaming hangover.

Follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to hosting successful RPG Game Nights in no time!
